Port Susan Farmers Market

Project

Healthy Food Awareness Program for Kids

Mission

Port Susan Farmer’s Market (PSFM) makes fresh local food accessible to all and cultivates long-term economic vitality for the Stanwood/Camano Island communities.

Description of Services

PSFM was created to support local farmers, bring people of Stanwood and Camano Island together, support local entrepreneurs and small businesses, create awareness of local growers, provide market shoppers nutrition and educational information and fresh local food accessible to all.

Program Outcome

To date, over 300 children between the ages of 2 and 12 are enrolled in Sprouting Health Kids.  Planned activities have focused on healthy food choices and teaching where our food comes.  Activities have included a beekeeper with bees, a dairy day to talk about dairy products, produce scavenger hunt, market “Meet the Farmer” BINGO, and a name that fruit or vegetable game.  We have also paired with other organizations such as the Library to promote their summer reading program—because a healthy mind is every bit as important as a healthy body. Throughout, we have promoted conversation about healthy choices for both the “Sprouts” and their parents.
